Microneedling FAQ
This blog is all about Microneedling and the frequently asked questions regarding the treatment.
Although Microneedling has become a very popular aesthetic procedure in recent years, its history dates back to 100BCE. The first recorded use of needles for controlled self-healing can be found in an ancient Chinese medical text about acupuncture.
Microneedling as we know it was invented in 1905 by German dermatologist Ernst Kromayer, who used it to treat birthmarks, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Today, medical spas all over the world use Microneedling to treat these same issues and more.
If you have ever wondered whether Microneedling is the right treatment for you, look no further. Here, we will lay out all of the most frequently asked questions about Microneedling and give you some clear, specific answers.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure wherein a device called a MicroPen creates tiny, controlled micro-wounds in the skin. The skin, when wounded, has a natural ability to repair itself. This process promotes the body’s production of collagen and elastin. Both of these proteins give skin a plump, youthful appearance.
What can Microneedling do for my skin?
The collagen and elastin that the skin creates in response to these tiny micro-wounds heals imperfections, such as scarring, acne, stretch marks, wrinkles, or poor texture. It also shrinks the appearance of pores and tightens the skin. The procedure leaves your skin looking younger, firmer, and more evenly toned and textured.
Does Microneedling hurt?
No! Your provider will numb your skin before they start the treatment.
Is there downtime?
It depends — Microneedling almost always leaves your skin looking red and flushed, so most patients opt to head straight home and wait about a day or two until the redness dissipates. However, you don’t need to do any serious R&R. You could return to your normal activities immediately after treatment if you feel so inclined.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the size of the treatment area, and Microneedling can be used almost anywhere on the body, the procedure usually takes about 30-45 minutes.
When will I notice my results?
Patients notice a fresh glow to their skin almost right away. Over the course of the next several days and weeks, your results will continue to manifest and improve, and will continue to do so for the next 6 months.
How many treatments do I need?
Generally, we recommend that patients receive 3-4 treatments every 6 to 8 weeks to see optimal results. However, depending on that person’s skin, a patient may need as few as one treatment or as much as 8 treatments to get the most out of their Microneedling experience.
